This session will examine the status of women in the Arabian Peninsula prior to and after the revelation of the Qur’an. We will look at Qur’anic verses which pertain to the rights of women. Strong feminine characters from the Qur’an as well as from the earliest Muslim community will also be discussed. Does the Qur’an instruct women to cover? How do these 7th-century verses still have meaning for Muslim women today? And how are Muslim American women impacted by Islamophobia? There will be time for Q & A.
